EAGAN, Minn. – The NFL owners made a historic decision on Tuesday, allowing private equity investors to own up to 10% of the teams in the league. This new rule marks a significant shift, as the NFL had previously prohibited such transactions.
During a special meeting in Minnesota, just days before the start of the regular season, the owners approved this groundbreaking change. Other major American sports leagues already allow private equity investors to own up to 30% of teams.
The NFL’s decision comes after a five-year study on the concept, with the recent sales of the Denver Broncos and Washington Commanders serving as examples of the potential for current owners to sell portions of their teams. This move also opens up new opportunities for prospective owners looking to invest in the league.
