KATHMANDU – The recent heavy rainfall in Nepal has caused devastating flooding and landslides, resulting in a tragic loss of 193 lives. As recovery and rescue efforts intensify, the nation mourns the victims of this natural disaster.

Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, bore the brunt of the heavy rainfall with many areas experiencing severe flooding. The death toll includes 31 people reported missing and 96 others injured across the Himalayan nation.

Tragically, a landslide on a blocked highway near Kathmandu claimed the lives of three dozen individuals. The landslide engulfed multiple vehicles, including buses, where people were sleeping due to the highway being impassable.

Despite the challenges, workers managed to temporarily open the key Prithvi highway, facilitating access in and out of Kathmandu by clearing debris washed down from the mountains.

The government has announced plans to provide temporary shelters for those who lost their homes, offer financial assistance to the families of the deceased and injured, and implement relief measures for the affected communities.

Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli has returned from the U.N. General Assembly meeting and called for an emergency meeting to address the crisis. With improved weather conditions, rescue and recovery operations are now in progress.

As Kathmandu begins the cleanup process, residents are picking up the pieces following the destructive floods. Despite the challenges, the spirit of resilience and solidarity shines through as the community bands together to rebuild.
