The Rise and Fall of Naomi Campbell’s Charity
British supermodel Naomi Campbell’s charity, Fashion for Relief, has been at the center of controversy. The Charity Commission in England and Wales has barred her from being a charity trustee for five years due to “poor governance” and “inadequate financial management.”
After a three-year investigation, it was revealed that only 8.5% of the charity’s expenditure went towards charitable grants over a six-year period. The commission found instances of misconduct, including the misuse of funds for Campbell’s personal expenses like luxury hotel stays in Cannes, spa treatments, and more.
The charity, founded in 2005 to support global causes, raised over $15 million through fashion initiatives and events in various cities. However, it was dissolved earlier this year after the investigation.
The Commission recovered £344,000 and protected £98,000 of charitable funds, which were used to settle liabilities and make donations to other charities. Trustees Bianka Hellmich and Veronica Chou were also disqualified for unauthorized funds and breaches of their duties.
Despite the controversy, Fashion for Relief aimed to unite the fashion industry for social causes. The story of Naomi Campbell’s charity serves as a cautionary tale for all organizations about the importance of financial transparency and governance.
A spokesperson for Naomi Campbell declined to comment on the matter. It’s a stark reminder of the consequences that can arise when charity leaders fail to fulfill their legal responsibilities.
