Myanmar’s Typhoon Yagi death toll climbs above 200 amidst civil war

BANGKOK – The recent floods and landslides in Myanmar, triggered by Typhoon Yagi and seasonal monsoon rains, have resulted in a devastating loss of at least 226 lives, with 77 people still missing, according to state-run media reports released on Tuesday.

The death toll, initially reported at 33 on Friday, has shockingly escalated to almost sevenfold in just a matter of days. The ongoing rescue and recovery efforts face challenges due to communication breakdowns with the affected areas, exacerbated by the existing civil unrest in Myanmar.

Typhoon Yagi’s impact was also felt in Vietnam, northern Thailand, and Laos, with significant casualties reported across the region. Nearly 300 lives were lost in Vietnam, 42 in Thailand, and four in Laos, as per the information from the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance.
