A Russian missile strike has ignited a fire in the Ukrainian city of Sumy, adding to the ongoing conflict between Ukrainian and Russian forces. The strike, which took place on Saturday, resulted in two injuries and damage to cars and nearby buildings, as reported by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. The use of an Iskander-K cruise missile and an aerial bomb was confirmed in the attack.
Ukrainian forces also claimed shooting down 14 Russian drones overnight in the Kyiv region. Meanwhile, intense fighting persists in Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops have been strategically deployed since August 6 to divert the Kremlin’s military focus away from the front line in Ukraine.
According to military correspondent Alexander Kots from the pro-Kremlin newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda, the Ukrainian pressure in Kursk shows no sign of weakening. He mentioned that while some sections of the front have stabilized, there are ongoing efforts by the enemy to expand its presence in certain areas.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova alleged that Ukraine used U.S.-made HIMARS rockets to destroy a bridge across the Seim River in the Glushkovsky district, cutting off supply routes for Russian forces in the Kursk region. However, this claim is yet to be independently confirmed.
The incursion into the Kursk region by Ukrainian forces has caused upheaval, leading to the evacuation of over 120,000 civilians. The unexpected conflict in the region has triggered confusion and panic among residents, as they continue to grapple with the unforeseen situation.
Ukrainian forces have also managed to capture a number of Russian troops during their advance in the region, further escalating tensions between the two nations. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude towards Ukrainian soldiers and commanders for their efforts in capturing Russian military personnel, emphasizing the importance of securing the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war.
As the conflict unfolds, the region remains in a state of uncertainty, with both sides engaging in intense military operations that are impacting the lives of civilians on the ground.
