‘Megalopolis’ fails, ‘Wild Robot’ dominates box office

Welcome to the Weekend Box Office Recap!

NEW YORK – The weekend box office had quite the tale of two films – Francis Ford Coppola’s highly anticipated “Megalopolis” and the surprise hit “Wild Robot” from DreamWorks Animation.

“Wild Robot,” the heartwarming adaptation of Peter Brown’s bestseller, exceeded all expectations by raking in $35 million in ticket sales across the US and Canada. The film tells the story of a shipwrecked robot who raises an orphan gosling and has captured the hearts of both critics and audiences alike, earning an A CinemaScore. The future looks bright for “Wild Robot” as it continues its successful run in theaters.

On the flip side, “Megalopolis,” Coppola’s ambitious Roman epic set in modern-day New York, failed to connect with audiences, only bringing in $4 million during its debut weekend. Despite the disappointing box office numbers, Coppola remained steadfast in his belief that the film is a personal statement about human potential, rather than a commercial endeavor.

In a surprising turn of events, Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” slipped to second place with $16 million in its fourth weekend, while “Transformers One,” the prequel to the popular franchise, landed in third place with $9 million on its second weekend.

Also making waves at the box office was Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” a nostalgic look at the iconic sketch-comedy show’s early days. With a strong per-theater average in limited release, “Saturday Night” is set to expand nationwide in the coming weeks.
