SAN ANTONIO – The trial of Brandon Cervera, charged with injury to a child in connection with the death of his 4-year-old son, Benjamin Cervera, took an emotional turn on Thursday as the focus shifted to the autopsy report.
Benjamin was found unresponsive on August 17, 2021, and later died in the hospital. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death as starvation after six months of investigation, placing the blame on the defendant.
Testifying in court was Bexar County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Kimberly Molina, shedding light on the details surrounding Benjamin’s tragic death. The autopsy results pointed to starvation as the cause of death, classified as a homicide.
Intake photos of Benjamin at the medical examiner’s office revealed his severe underweight condition, indicating a lack of proper care and nourishment.
Cervera is the second defendant to face trial for Benjamin’s death, following his ex-wife’s conviction. If found guilty, he could face life in prison, adding to the already heartbreaking outcome of this case.
The trial is set to continue on Friday, with live coverage available on KSAT 12’s digital platforms. We caution viewers that the graphic details of the trial may be distressing.
