The Return of Sam Spade: A New Chapter in the Legacy of Dashiell Hammett

NEW YORK – The timeless tale of the legendary detective, Sam Spade, created by Dashiell Hammett, is set to be continued by celebrated crime writer Max Allan Collins.

The publication of Collins’ “The Return of the Maltese Falcon” is scheduled for January 2026, coinciding with the entry of Hammett’s classic novel, “The Maltese Falcon,” into the public domain. “The Maltese Falcon,” first published in 1930 and immortalized on screen by Humphrey Bogart in the 1941 film adaptation, is revered as a quintessential example of the hard-boiled detective genre.

Reflecting on the impact of Hammett’s work, Collins stated, “Not that writing about the world Hammett created, and those immortal, sometimes immoral characters isn’t challenging — Hammett’s best mystery also happens to be one of the greatest American novels, period.”

When a book enters the public domain, authors are granted the freedom to explore its characters and storyline in new and innovative ways. Following F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” entering the public domain in 2021, various reinterpretations and adaptations emerged, showcasing the enduring appeal of classic literature.

According to Hard Case Crime, Collins’ upcoming release will reunite readers with familiar characters like Spade and Joel Cairo, alongside the introduction of “a mysterious new femme fatale.” With a track record of successful collaborations with iconic literary figures, including Dick Tracy and Mike Hammer, Collins is well-equipped to breathe new life into the world of Sam Spade.

“I’m something of an old hand at walking in the shoes of the giants who came before, though I never claim to filling them,” Collins remarked to The Associated Press.

Over the years, various authorized projects have expanded on the legacy of Sam Spade, demonstrating the enduring popularity of the iconic character. From prequels to spin-offs, the world of Sam Spade continues to captivate audiences across different mediums.
