MIAMI – The Miami Marlins have decided to part ways with Skip Schumaker, marking the end of his two-season tenure as the team’s manager. Schumaker, who was named the NL Manager of the Year in 2023, led the Marlins to a record of 146-178 during his time with the team.
Schumaker was hired in 2022 as the Marlins’ 16th manager, with a contract that included a club option for the 2025 season. However, the team chose to void this option earlier this year.
Reflecting on his time with the Marlins, Schumaker said, “It has been a tremendous honor serving as manager of the Miami Marlins. I’ve built long-lasting friendships with the staff and players and am proud of all that we accomplished together.”
Despite a challenging start in his first season, Schumaker guided the Marlins to their first playoff appearance since 2003, only to be swept by the Phillies in the NL wild-card series. The team faced significant changes in the front office during the following offseason, including the departure of general manager Kim Ng, who was responsible for hiring Schumaker.
Unfortunately, the Marlins’ success in 2023 did not carry over to the following season. After a historically poor 0-9 start, the team underwent a rebuild that saw several key players traded for prospects. This included moving on from veterans like Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Josh Bell.
Schumaker, who had a successful playing career with World Series-winning teams, joined the Marlins after coaching stints with the Cardinals and Padres. His departure means the Marlins are once again in search of a new field manager.
Marlins owner Bruce Sherman expressed the team’s commitment to finding a new leader, marking another chapter in the franchise’s history of managerial changes. Only Don Mattingly has managed the team for more than four seasons in its 32-year history.
