TERRELL HILLS, Texas – Those who live or drive through Terrell Hills may notice some added safety measures. The Terrell Hills Police Department recently installed ten license plate readers throughout the community to enhance security.
“It will help solve cases a lot quicker,” said Terrell Hills Police Chief Gail Baham.
The license plate readers were deployed on September 5th and have already proved useful in several cases, according to Baham.
“We mainly deal with property crimes here in Terrell Hills,” Baham explained, “If one of our residents has a vehicle burglarized, I can review the camera footage to identify suspicious vehicles in the area at the time.”
The total cost of installing the ten license plate readers amounted to approximately $60,000, with 73% of the funding coming from the department’s assets forfeiture fund from their former association with a task force officer (TFO) assigned to the DEA.
Baham reassured the public regarding privacy concerns, stating that images of license plates will be stored in their database for three years but will not be accessible through open record requests.
The ten license plate readers are strategically placed at various locations in Terrell Hills, including residential areas and public spaces such as the Terrell Hills Community Playground.
