Lebanese Civil Defense Struggles Amidst Crisis

BEIRUT – In the aftermath of Israel’s bombing campaign near Sidon in southern Lebanon, Mohamed Arkadan and his team of first responders found themselves facing an unprecedented emergency. The destruction was overwhelming, with dozens of people trapped beneath collapsed buildings. Despite their best efforts, Arkadan and his team were hampered by a lack of resources and equipment. The dire situation highlighted the challenges faced by Lebanon’s civil defense forces in providing essential services to the population.

An economic crisis and a devastating port explosion in 2020 have left Lebanon reeling, with basic services in short supply. The political turmoil in the country has further compounded the challenges, leaving first responders like Arkadan struggling to save lives with inadequate tools and resources.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has only added to Lebanon’s woes, displacing thousands of people and straining already limited resources. The situation is dire, with the healthcare system overwhelmed and medical staff facing exhaustion.

Despite the challenges, Arkadan and his team continue to work tirelessly to rescue those in need, using whatever tools they have at their disposal. The humanitarian crisis in Lebanon is reaching critical levels, with the civil defense forces on the front lines of the struggle.
