Kosovo’s PM urges reopening Mitrovica bridge, but West cautious

The Controversy over Reopening a Bridge in Mitrovica, Kosovo

PRISTINA – Kosovo’s prime minister has sparked controversy by advocating for the full reopening of a bridge in Mitrovica. Prime Minister Albin Kurti claims that this move towards free movement is crucial for peace and security in the region and is not intended to threaten anyone. However, Western powers express caution over the potential repercussions of such a decision, fearing increased tensions.

The bridge in Mitrovica has been a point of contention for over a decade, as it has been closed to passenger vehicles. The Serb minority in the area has frequently erected barricades in protest, alleging that allowing ethnic Albanians to freely cross the bridge would lead to “ethnic cleansing.” The city of Mitrovica itself is divided, with a predominantly Serb north and an ethnic Albanian south, resulting in limited interaction between the two communities.

Kosovo, a former Serbian province, has been embroiled in ethnic tensions since the 1999 war that led to its independence. While the bridge is currently open to commercial and pedestrian traffic, there are proposals to fully reopen it to passenger vehicles. This proposition has raised concerns among Western powers, who fear it could reignite interethnic conflicts in the region.

In response, Prime Minister Kurti emphasizes the importance of freedom of movement and the rule of law in justifying the bridge’s full reopening. He asserts that Kosovo is a normal state where bridges should promote openness and connectivity, rather than division.

The bridge over the Iber River symbolizes the complexities of ethnic relations in Mitrovica. While ethnic Serbs in Kosovo’s north protest the reopening, citing fears of ethnic cleansing, Serbia’s government aligns with their stance, advocating for the bridge’s closure. International peacekeepers warn against unilateral actions that could escalate tensions in the region.

The call to reopen the bridge underscores the ongoing challenges in Kosovo-Serbia relations, exacerbated by past violent incidents. Efforts by the EU and the US to mediate have yet to yield significant progress, with both sides urged to honor previous agreements and prioritize dialogue.

As tensions persist in Mitrovica, the debate over the bridge’s future remains a focal point in the broader context of regional stability and reconciliation.
