King Charles III to tour Australia and Samoa after cancer diagnosis, proving stamina

LONDON – King Charles III has exciting plans to visit Australia and Samoa next month on a monumental journey that will span a dozen time zones. This trip will not only test the monarch’s stamina but also signify a significant moment in his reign as he continues to recover from cancer treatment.

The tour, scheduled for Oct 18-26 as outlined by Buckingham Palace, marks a pivotal moment for the 75-year-old King Charles. After taking a break following his cancer diagnosis in February, he is slowly returning to public duties, and this journey serves as a testament to his recovery.

The itinerary will commence in Australia before the king and Queen Camilla head to Samoa for the Commonwealth heads of government meeting, a biennial event. Although the tour was initially announced in July, specific dates were only disclosed recently, adding to the anticipation of the trip.

Charles’ extensive travel plans align with his efforts to strengthen support for the monarchy, both domestically and internationally, following his ascension to the throne two years ago. His visit to Australia will mark a significant milestone as it’s the first time since becoming king that Charles will visit one of the Commonwealth realms, comprising 14 countries where he serves as the head of state alongside the UK.

The upcoming journey holds great importance as Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed interest in holding a referendum to transition the country into a republic by severing ties with the monarchy. However, with recent referendum plans being halted, the landscape awaits further development.

Charles’ visit to Samoa in his role as the head of the Commonwealth, an association of 56 independent nations with historical ties to the UK, emphasizes his dedication to global cooperation and partnership.

The palace stated, “The king’s visit to Australia will be his majesty’s first to a realm as monarch, whilst the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa is the first the King will attend as head of the Commonwealth. In both countries, their Majesties’ engagements will focus on themes designed to celebrate the best of Australia and Samoa, as well as reflecting aspects of the king and queen’s work.”
