A Shocking Tragedy in Whitesburg, Kentucky: Judge Killed by Sheriff in Courthouse Shooting

In a shocking turn of events, a judge in rural Kentucky met a tragic end when he was shot and killed in his courthouse chambers. What makes this story even more disturbing is that the alleged perpetrator was none other than the local sheriff, who has been charged with murder.

According to Kentucky State Police, Letcher County Sheriff Shawn M. Stines shot District Judge Kevin Mullins multiple times following an argument inside the courthouse. Mullins, who had been serving as a judge for 15 years, tragically lost his life at the scene. Stines surrendered without incident after the shooting.

The news of this heinous act has left the Kentucky legal community reeling, with Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice Laurance B. VanMeter expressing shock and sorrow at the violence that transpired. The county courthouse in Whitesburg, where the incident occurred, has been closed by the judge-executive as a mark of respect for the fallen judge.

At just 54 years old, Judge Mullins was a respected figure in the community, known for his advocacy for substance abuse treatment and innovative programs to support those in need. His tragic death has left a void that will be hard to fill.

As the investigation into this senseless act continues, the governor and attorney general of Kentucky have pledged to seek justice for Judge Mullins and his family. Efforts are being made to ensure that such a tragedy never occurs again in the state.

In the wake of this tragedy, the community has come together to mourn the loss of a dedicated public servant and to demand accountability for the crime that took his life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Judge Kevin Mullins during this difficult time.
