MLB Playoff Roster Updates: Verlander Left Off Astros Roster, Alvarez Included Despite Injury
The Houston Astros made some interesting roster decisions for their AL Wild Card Series against Detroit. Three-time Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander was notably left off the roster, while injured slugger Yordan Alvarez was included.
Verlander struggled in his return after missing almost two months with a neck injury this summer. The veteran right-hander had a rough September, going 2-2 with a 9.26 ERA in five starts. Astros manager Joe Espada emphasized that Verlander could still be considered for future rounds if the team advances.
Alvarez, who missed the end of the regular season with a right knee sprain, is expected to contribute as the designated hitter. The 27-year-old has a strong postseason track record, boasting a career .295 batting average with 12 homers and a .949 OPS in 58 playoff games.
Outfielder Chas McCormick also made the roster after recovering from a small fracture in his right hand suffered in September.
Other Playoff Roster Updates:
Chris Sale: The Atlanta Braves will be without left-hander Chris Sale for their NL Wild Card Series against San Diego. Sale was sidelined with back spasms and is not expected to return until at least the Division Series.
Vinnie Pasquantino: Kansas City’s Pasquantino returned from injury to join the AL Wild Card Series roster against Baltimore. Although he cannot play first base due to a broken thumb, Pasquantino is available as a hitter.
Sal Frelick: Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick was included in the NL Wild Card Series roster after recovering from a hip bruise sustained in a collision with a wall. He is determined to contribute despite the injury.
Tylor Megill: The New York Mets decided to leave off right-hander Tylor Megill after his recent start, opting instead to include Max Kranick, who has not pitched in the majors since 2022 due to injury.
These roster updates add intrigue to the MLB playoffs as teams look to advance through the postseason.
