Welcome to the Premier of Jeanine Tesori’s “Grounded” at the Metropolitan Opera
In a historic moment, Jeanine Tesori becomes the first woman composer to open a season at the Metropolitan Opera’s 141-year history with the revised version of her opera “Grounded.” Directed by Michael Mayer, the gala premiere of “Grounded” starring mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo is set to captivate audiences on Monday night.
Based on George Brant’s one-woman play, “Grounded” tells the story of Jess, a fighter pilot turned drone pilot who grapples with moral dilemmas and the consequences of her actions in a world of automated warfare.
After a series of adjustments and revisions, the opera has been trimmed for a more streamlined and impactful performance, eliminating the Trainer character and reducing the overall runtime. Tesori and Mayer worked tirelessly to refine the opera, ensuring that every note and scene contributes to the emotional depth and narrative power of “Grounded.”
The revised score, composed by Tesori, promises to resonate with audiences, challenging perceptions and exploring the complexities of modern warfare and female perspectives in the genre.
The Met Opera’s commitment to showcasing diverse voices and perspectives is evident in their upcoming seasons, featuring works by women composers like Kaija Saariaho, Gabriela Lena Frank, and Missy Mazzoli.
With a visually stunning set design by Mimi Lien and a talented cast led by Emily D’Angelo, “Grounded” promises to be a thought-provoking and unforgettable experience for opera enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
Join us for the premiere of “Grounded” at the Met Opera and witness the transformative power of music, storytelling, and female creativity on the grand stage of one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses.
