JBSA-Lackland gate shootings connected to separate shooting, BCSO confirms

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has linked two shootings that occurred in front of JBSA-Lackland’s training annex front gate on August 17 and a separate shooting later that day through ballistic evidence.

The National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), which compares ballistic evidence from violent crimes, connected shell casings from bullets fired at a West Side apartment and shell casings found near JBSA-Lackland early that Saturday morning.

According to county documents, a BCSO deputy received a “NIBIN hit” from the shell casings recovered from the West Side apartment shooting that matched the shootings outside JBSA-Lackland where military personnel were targeted with what they believed to be an automatic weapon.

The West Side apartment complex and JBSA-Lackland’s training annex front gate are about six miles apart.

Nearly 20 hours after the shootings near JBSA-Lackland, BCSO responded to another shooting in the 1500 block of Marbach Oaks, where a man was found with a gunshot wound.

The incident involved Elijah Martinez, 19, accidentally shooting a male victim while handling a weapon inside an apartment. The victim was holding a six-month-old child at the time.

Following the Marbach Oaks shooting, both Martinez and another person, Joseph Jimenez, were arrested on separate charges related to the incident.

While Jimenez faces a deadly conduct charge, Martinez has been charged with child endangerment for the unfortunate event.

The authorities are still investigating the shootings near JBSA-Lackland, and as of now, no arrests have been made in connection with those incidents.
