The Heartbreaking Story of Janie Najera: Seeking Justice for Her Husband
Janie Najera vividly recalls the horrific day when a simple walk outside turned into a nightmare. The barking and charging dogs next door quickly escalated into a tragic dog attack that would change her life forever.
“He just couldn’t get him off of him. And he kept on screaming, and he was calling out to me, and he kept on saying, ‘Janie, Janie, I can’t get the dog off of me.’ And I was screaming to see if somebody could hear us, you know,” she said, recounting the harrowing incident that took place on Depla Street in February 2023.
Janie was bitten and knocked to the ground by a pitbull, and her husband, Ramon Najera, heroically jumped in to save her. Tragically, he did not survive the attack.
“The fire department got there in time to save me, but I could hear my husband screaming. My husband is my hero because he saved my life,” she said, still in shock from that fateful day.
Seeking justice for her husband, Janie recently testified in court against the dog owners, Christian Moreno and Abilene Schneider. The couple pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous dog attack resulting in death, and the trial is now in the punishment phase.
Janie tearfully recounted the terrifying incident, her painful recovery, and the guilt of being the sole survivor. She believes that the city’s Animal Care Services failed her and her husband by not taking necessary action against the dangerous dogs earlier.
As she fights for justice, Ramon Najera’s children stand by her side, honoring their father’s memory and supporting their grieving mother.
“I think about him every day, in my quiet moments, in my pain. I wonder why the police didn’t come sooner, why they couldn’t save him,” Janie said, reflecting on the tragedy that continues to haunt her.
Despite the pain and loss, Janie remains grateful for the firefighters who came to her rescue and the support they provided during her darkest hours.
As the Najera family seeks closure and justice for Ramon, their story serves as a reminder of the importance of holding accountable those responsible for such tragic events.
