Iranian Hackers Charged with Targeting Trump Campaign Unveiled by Justice Department
The Justice Department has exposed the criminal charges against three Iranian operatives suspected of hacking Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and sharing stolen information with media outlets. These hackers, who were part of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, targeted various entities, including government officials, media personalities, and non-governmental organizations.
After the Trump campaign announced the hack on August 10, it was revealed that Iranian actors had pilfered confidential internal documents. Several major news outlets, however, chose not to publish this leaked information, including Politico, The New York Times, and The Washington Post.
U.S. intelligence officials have connected Iran to the hacking of the Trump campaign and an attempted breach of the Joe Biden-Kamala Harris campaign. This operation aimed to create chaos, exploit societal rifts, and potentially influence critical elections that Iran deems vital for its national security interests.
In a recent disclosure, it was confirmed that Iranians sent unsolicited emails in late June and early July containing excerpts of the stolen data to individuals linked to the Biden campaign. The outreach was denounced by the Harris campaign as malicious activity.
Amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran, the indictment underscores the ongoing threats posed by Iran. As Iran-backed Hezbollah and Israel engage in heightened hostilities, there are growing concerns about a potential escalation to full-blown conflict. Additionally, U.S. officials are actively monitoring physical threats from Iran against various officials, including President Trump.
