Man Charged with Murder in Connection to Bexar County Jail Inmate’s Death
Recently, a tragic incident occurred at the Bexar County Jail that has left the community in shock. Jose Barrera, a 62-year-old inmate, was found dead, and Anthony Chase McGruder, 28, has been charged with his murder. This is not the first violent incident involving McGruder, as he has a history of assaulting other inmates, as per an arrest warrant affidavit.
According to the affidavit, McGruder was involved in another assault almost immediately after Barrera’s death, further highlighting his violent tendencies. One inmate described McGruder as a troublemaker within the cell, with previous allegations of assault and injuring the elderly.
During the investigation, McGruder admitted to killing Barrera, stating that he struck him with a sandal and then proceeded to choke him with a sheet. This level of violence is deeply concerning, especially considering McGruder’s past arrests for assault.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office jail staff reported that McGruder continued to display aggressive and erratic behavior following the incident, further solidifying the need for swift and decisive action in this case.
