Welcome to the Northeast Side community of San Antonio, where residents are dealing with a major issue of illegal tire dumping. Approximately 100 tires have been left in this neighborhood, causing frustration and concern among locals.
According to Lisa Pfeiffer from the East Village Neighborhood Association, the dumping of tires is an abuse of the neighborhood and something the residents did not ask for. A recent incident on Castle Hunt saw nearly 40 tires dumped in an empty lot, creating a potential fire hazard in the area. Pfeiffer estimates that there are around 100 tires illegally dumped within a two-to-three-mile radius of various locations, including alleyways, a nearby elementary school, and a Family Dollar store.
Despite efforts to report the issue to authorities, including 311, Judson ISD police, and local safe officers with SAPD, the tires have remained untouched for two weeks. Frustrated by the lack of action, residents reached out to San Antonio’s Solid Waste Management Department for assistance.
In response to the situation, the department dispatched crews to the Northeast Side neighborhood to address the illegal dumping issue. In a statement, they revealed that in 2024 alone, they have cleaned up over 10,000 illegal dumping sites, totaling around 3,040 tons of waste. When locations are reported, they aim to respond within 1-2 days to remove the waste and keep the community clean and safe.
It’s important for all residents to work together to prevent illegal dumping and keep our neighborhoods clean. Let’s all do our part to ensure a clean and safe environment for everyone.
