HOUSTON – The Detroit Tigers pulled off a stunning upset against the Houston Astros in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series. Andy Ibáñez’s three-run double in the eighth inning was the game-changer, leading the Tigers to a 5-2 victory and a sweep of the series.
Parker Meadows also played a crucial role by hitting a home run, ending Houston’s seven-year streak of appearances in the AL Championship Series. For Tigers manager A.J. Hinch, a former Astros manager, it was a bittersweet win against his former team.
The Tigers now advance to face the AL Central champions, the Cleveland Guardians, in the AL Division Series. Game 1 is set for Saturday.
The game was tied at 2-2 in the eighth inning when Kerry Carpenter’s single off Ryan Pressly sparked Detroit’s rally. Ibáñez’s three-run double sealed the deal, giving the Tigers a 5-2 lead.
Josh Hader, Houston’s closer, struggled in the pivotal inning, allowing multiple hits and walks.
