EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The New York Giants are making history by bringing their first retired number, No. 1, back into play for their sensational rookie receiver, Malik Nabers.
The Giants made the exciting announcement that Nabers will sport the iconic No. 1 jersey for the upcoming season, breaking a tradition that has lasted since 1935 when the number was retired along with end Ray Flaherty’s retirement, marking the first number retirement in professional football history.
In discussions between Giants’ co-owner and chief executive John Mara and Ray Flaherty, Jr., the decision to un-retire the historic number was finalized.
Previously wearing No. 9 since being drafted, Nabers needed a new number due to clashes with other players, leading to the selection of the revered No. 1 jersey.
In a statement released by the team, Nabers expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to honor the Flaherty family’s legacy by wearing the retired number, vowing to represent it with pride and dedication.
Following practice, Nabers chose not to address the media in the locker room but is scheduled to speak on Thursday, showcasing his reverence for the momentous occasion.
The Giants revealed that Nabers had sought permission from Mara and received approval from the surviving members of the Flaherty family before activating the retired number, highlighting the respect and honor surrounding the decision.
Ray Flaherty, a legendary figure in football history, was posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1976 for his contributions as a player and coach, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that Nabers now carries forward.
