NEW YORK – Harvey Weinstein, the infamous ex-movie mogul, was rushed to a New York City hospital from Rikers Island jail complex due to severe chest pains. He underwent an emergency medical procedure to remove fluid on his heart and lungs, his representatives confirmed.
Weinstein, 72, had complained of chest pains over the weekend and was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan. His publicist Juda Engelmayer and prison consultant Craig Rothfeld said that Weinstein had a surgery on his heart and the procedure was successful.
Following complaints of chest pains, Weinstein’s lawyer, Arthur Aidala, urgently requested jail officials to transfer Weinstein to Bellevue Hospital. Aidala conveyed the urgency of the situation by stating, “This guy is going to die on your watch if you don’t do something.”
Weinstein has a history of health issues and has been in and out of Bellevue Hospital since his return to Rikers Island in April. He had previously battled COVID-19 and pneumonia in both lungs back in July.
In addition to these health challenges, Weinstein also suffers from various other medical conditions including diabetes, coronary artery disease, and chronic pain.
The ongoing legal saga of Weinstein involves a retrial in Manhattan following the overturning of his 2020 rape and sexual assault convictions. Prosecutors are now considering additional charges against him for up to three new sex assaults.
Despite his denials, Weinstein’s legal troubles continue to mount as he faces potential new indictments and a 16-year sentence in California for a separate rape conviction.
In the wake of the #MeToo movement, Weinstein’s downfall marked a significant moment in Hollywood history. Once a powerful figure in the industry, he now faces a long road ahead in the legal arena.
