The Need for Mental Health Crisis Assistance in Texas
When faced with a mental health crisis, reaching out for help can be incredibly challenging. In the state of Texas, thousands of individuals dial 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, seeking support and assistance. This number was shortened from a 1-800 number to just three digits, making it easier for people to remember and access during emergencies.
In the past two years since the implementation of the 988 Lifeline, call centers across the nation have received over 10 million calls, texts, and chats. However, recent data indicates that some of these calls remain unanswered, particularly in Texas.
According to the 988 Lifeline’s online database, Texas had an answer rate of 81% in July, meaning nearly two out of every ten calls went unanswered. Over 21,000 individuals attempted to contact the crisis lifeline that month, emphasizing the urgent need for improved response and support services.
Despite the challenges, Jelynne LeBlanc Jamison, CEO of the Center for Health Care Services, remains optimistic about the progress, noting that the answer rate is gradually improving. However, concerns remain about the geographical disconnect between callers in Bexar County and call centers in Travis County.
While the state only has four call centers handling 988 calls, efforts are being made to ensure that individuals in crisis receive the help they need. However, it is clear that more resources and support are required to meet the growing demand for mental health services in Texas.
As the population in San Antonio continues to increase, the need for accessible and responsive mental health resources becomes even more pressing. Organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) are advocating for legislative support and funding to expand the 988 system and improve mental health services statewide.
For individuals in Bexar County seeking mental health support, a list of essential numbers to call has been provided:
- 911
- Non-Emergency City of San Antonio – (210) 207-7273
- 988 Lifeline
- CHCS – (210) 223-7233 or 1(800) 316-9241
- Bexar County Sheriff’s Office – (210) 335-6000
It’s crucial to remember that help is available, and it’s okay to reach out for support during difficult times. By working together and advocating for improved mental health services, we can ensure that individuals in crisis receive the care and assistance they deserve.
