Federer returns to US Open as fan, discusses Sinner’s doping case

Roger Federer Questions Jannik Sinner’s Doping Case

NEW YORK – Roger Federer is raising questions about Jannik Sinner’s recent doping case and whether the current No. 1-ranked tennis player should have been allowed to continue competing amidst the allegations of using an anabolic steroid intentionally.

During an appearance on the “Today” show to promote a book of photos of him, Federer expressed concerns about the impact of such news on the sport. While he believes in Sinner’s innocence, Federer questions whether there was inconsistency in allowing him to continue competing while the investigation was ongoing.

Hours later, Federer received a warm ovation from fans at the U.S. Open quarterfinals, marking his first visit to the venue since retiring in 2022 after his last official match at Wimbledon the previous year.

As the last man to win consecutive titles at the U.S. Open, Federer’s legacy in the sport is undeniable. Several top players, including Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, have weighed in on the matter, with Djokovic acknowledging the challenges of navigating such allegations in the sport.

Reflecting on his conversation with Nadal, Federer expressed admiration for his longtime rival and friend, hoping that Nadal can choose his terms for retirement and return to the tour on his own timeline.

As the tennis world grapples with these complex issues, Federer emphasizes the importance of trust in the process and integrity of the sport.
