BARCELONA – Barcelona has made an exciting addition to its squad by bringing in former Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to fill in for the injured Marc-André ter Stegen.
Szczesny previously retired from professional soccer in August after departing from Italian club Juventus.
Despite the unusual circumstances, Barcelona announced Wednesday that the 34-year-old Szczesny’s impressive skills and experience make him a valuable asset to the team.
Barcelona has secured a deal with Szczesny to remain with the club until the end of the season.
Following ter Stegen’s injury and subsequent surgery for a ruptured tendon in his right knee, the team’s captain is expected to be out for several months.
Iñaki Peña has been filling in as Barcelona’s goalkeeper since Ter Stegen’s injury, with support from coach Hansi Flick. However, the addition of an experienced goalkeeper like Szczesny was deemed necessary for the team.
Szczesny was present at Barcelona’s recent 5-0 victory over Young Boys in the Champions League, observing the match from a VIP section at the Montjuic stadium.
Having started his professional career at Arsenal and earning 84 caps for Poland, including appearances at major tournaments, Szczesny brings a wealth of international experience to Barcelona.
