Building Support for Palestinian Statehood: A Global Initiative
TANZANIA – European, Arab and Islamic nations have come together to launch a groundbreaking initiative aimed at bolstering support for the establishment of a Palestinian state and its institutions. The goal is to pave the way for a future beyond the recent conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, says Norway’s foreign minister, Espen Barth Eide.
Eide emphasized that there is a growing consensus among countries worldwide that the recognition of a Palestinian state is essential. He highlighted the need to address various critical issues, such as the security interests of both Israel and Palestine, as well as the challenge of demobilizing groups like Hamas.
“These are pieces of a bigger puzzle,” Eide explained. “To achieve a lasting solution, all the pieces need to fall into place.”
Despite the challenges, Eide remains optimistic that a new approach is necessary to finally establish an independent Palestinian state after years of failed negotiations.
At a recent meeting during the U.N. General Assembly, nearly 90 countries convened to launch “The Global Alliance for the Implementation of a Palestinian State and a Two-State Solution.” This alliance aims to break the deadlock and transform the conflict into an opportunity for progress.
As a key player in the peace process, Norway has taken significant steps to advance the cause of Palestinian statehood. To date, 149 out of 193 U.N. member nations have recognized a Palestinian state, underscoring the global momentum behind this initiative.
Joining forces with Saudi Arabia, the European Union, and other partners, Norway is leading the charge to push for tangible actions that can lead to the coexistence of a free Palestine alongside a secure Israel.
This new initiative builds on the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, offering a fresh perspective to tackle the ongoing conflict. It aims to strengthen the institutions of a Palestinian state and pave the way for a peaceful settlement.
Eide concluded by expressing his confidence in the potential of this unified effort to bring about a positive change in the region: “I am convinced it will happen here.”
