The Emmys Return to Strong Ratings with Nearly 7 Million Viewers
The Emmys telecast on ABC has seen a significant increase in viewership, bringing in nearly 7 million viewers. This marks a jump of over 50 percent from the record low of the last ceremony in January and is the largest audience since 2021, according to numbers released by the network. Sunday night’s 76th Primetime Emmy Awards featured winners such as “Shogun,” “Hacks,” and “Baby Reindeer,” and returned to its traditional mid-September slot after the rare January ceremony that was delayed by Hollywood’s strikes.
The January ceremony, which aired on Fox, saw a record low audience of 4.3 million viewers. However, the Sunday night show hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy saw a significant increase in viewership, reaching 6.87 million viewers, a 54 percent jump despite facing competition from NFL football.
The height-of-the-pandemic Emmys in 2020 on ABC set a new low with 6.1 million viewers due to no in-person audience and remote nominees. The following year saw a bounce-back with 7.4 million viewers for CBS, aided by an NFL game lead-in. However, NBC’s 2022 telecast dropped to 5.9 million viewers, with a further decline in viewership in January of the following year.
The Emmys telecast rotates annually between the four broadcast networks. The last time the Emmys surpassed 10 million viewers was in 2018, with 10.2 million tuning in. In 2000, the show reached a peak of 21.8 million viewers, a milestone unlikely to be surpassed.
