As much as we yearn for the cool embrace of fall, we find ourselves surrounded by scented candles and autumn decor to set the mood, despite the lingering heat.
The weather forecast offers little respite, with no hint of cooler temperatures on the horizon in the coming weeks.
MAIN TAKEAWAYS
-
San Antonio usually experiences cooler weather by now
-
No cold fronts expected through at least mid-October
-
Staying rain free
WHAT’S NORMAL?
When examining climatological data, it’s customary to analyze the trends from the past 30 years. Typically, San Antonio sees temperatures dropping below 80 degrees in autumn by mid-September, with the first morning below 60 degrees arriving by late September. However, this year, we’ve yet to reach those milestones.
The latest recorded afternoon with temperatures below 80 degrees was in 2015 on Oct. 24, while the latest morning with temperatures below 60 degrees was in 2007 on Oct. 19.
It’s possible that we may break these records this year, given the current weather patterns.
NO RELIEF IN SIGHT
October typically heralds the arrival of significant cold fronts in San Antonio as cooler air from Canada sweeps across the United States. Unfortunately, the latest forecast indicates that Canada and the northern U.S. will experience warmer-than-average temperatures, delaying the arrival of cold fronts in our region.
STAYING DRY, TOO
October is typically one of San Antonio’s rainiest months, with an average of 3.75 inches of rainfall. However, without the push from cold fronts, we’re unlikely to see much rain in the coming weeks.
This dry spell comes at a time when South Central Texas is already grappling with drought conditions that have persisted for over 1,000 days in Bexar County.
IT’LL FEEL COOL…EVENTUALLY
While the fall weather is tardy this year, rest assured that cooler days will come. As Your Weather Authority, we’ll keep you informed when that first cold snap finally arrives!
