LOS ANGELES – Domingo Germán is getting a second chance in the big leagues, a year after he flamed out with the New York Yankees because of behavioral issues.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have now selected the right-handed pitcher’s contract from Triple-A Indianapolis. Germán posted a 6-4 record with a 5.29 ERA in 13 starts with the Indians this season.
Last June, Germán tossed the 24th perfect game in major league history. However, just two months later, he found himself on MLB’s restricted list following an incident in the Yankees clubhouse.
Unfortunately for the 32-year-old Dominican pitcher, this was just another strike. In 2019, Germán received an 81-game suspension from MLB for violating the league’s domestic violence policy during an incident involving his then-girlfriend.
After the Yankees cut ties with Germán, his baseball future seemed uncertain. However, he signed a minor-league deal with the Pirates in March and has now joined the team in Los Angeles ahead of a three-game series with the NL West-leading Dodgers.
Germán is expected to provide a much-needed boost to the struggling Pirates’ bullpen. With a career record of 31-28, a 4.41 ERA, and 543 strikeouts in 112 appearances, including 89 starts, Germán’s experience will be valuable to his new team.
As Germán joins the active roster, pitcher Hunter Stratton has been optioned to Triple-A to make room for him. Additionally, pitcher Josh Walker has been designated for assignment to accommodate Germán on the 40-man roster.
