Debby’s Devastating Impact on the East Coast
While no longer a tropical storm, Debby continues to wreak havoc on the East Coast, bringing heavy rain, flooding, and chaos in its wake. Rivers are overflowing, prompting authorities to call in the National Guard for high water rescues.
The storm, which made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in Florida before becoming a tropical storm, moved northward from the Carolinas, causing dangerous flooding in New York and Pennsylvania. Heavy downpours, flash flooding, and tornadoes are expected to persist over the weekend, particularly in areas along Interstate 95 near major cities.
With at least nine reported deaths so far, mostly due to accidents and fallen trees, the aftermath of Debby’s rampage is devastating. Here are some of the latest updates:
Evacuation Orders Lifted
Some evacuation orders have been lifted in parts of Steuben County, New York, as the threat of severe flooding subsides in certain areas. However, evacuation orders remain in place for hamlets like Jasper and Woodhull due to closed primary access roads.
Pennsylvania Gov. Declares Disaster
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has issued a disaster declaration for 21 counties in the state to provide swift resources to areas hit hardest by Debby’s remnants.

Debby Downgraded to Tropical Depression
The National Hurricane Center has downgraded Debby to a tropical depression with maximum sustained wind speeds of 35 mph. The storm has already caused significant damage and disruption across several states.
South Carolina Spared Major Damage
Thankfully, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced that the state has avoided major damage or fatalities from Debby. However, the threat of flooding persists as rains continue upstream.
North Carolina Increases National Guard Presence
