SAN ANTONIO: A couple involved in a tragic dog attack from 2023 has changed their plea to guilty on Tuesday, avoiding a trial that was set for next month.
Christian Moreno and Abilene Schnieder faced charges related to a fatal dog attack that resulted in the death of 81-year-old Ramon Najera and serious injuries to his wife.
The couple was charged with a dangerous dog attack leading to death and injury to an elderly person.
On February 24, 2023, while visiting a friend in a West Side neighborhood, Ramon Najera and his wife were attacked by two of the couple’s dogs that had escaped their yard.
Tragically, Ramon Najera succumbed to his injuries.
Instead of going to trial as planned, Moreno and Schnieder opted to plead guilty. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 9, with the sentencing decision to be announced on September 20.
The prosecution is seeking the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, while the defense is requesting 10 years of probation.
