Uncovering the Truth Behind Angi: Are You at Risk? The Personal StoriesTips for Protecting YourselfAngi’s Response

If you’re a homeowner looking to get projects completed, you may have heard of Angi – the online platform that connects you with service professionals. But what you may not know is the hidden risks that come with using this service.

A recent investigation by KSAT has uncovered shocking stories of consumers and contractors who have fallen victim to criminal activities after using Angi. From stolen jewelry to unauthorized transactions, the fallout from these incidents has left many feeling betrayed and vulnerable.

The Personal Stories

Take Jesse Aranda, for example. He used Angi to find a contractor to build a custom pool in his backyard, only to be left high and dry after the builder took his down payment and disappeared. Despite his efforts to seek help from Angi, he was left to deal with the situation on his own.

But Aranda’s story is just the tip of the iceberg. Other homeowners have reported similar experiences, painting a grim picture of the risks involved in using Angi to find contractors.

Tips for Protecting Yourself

To avoid falling victim to scams and fraud, it’s essential to vet contractors thoroughly before hiring them. San Antonio Police Department Detective Ronald Rocha advises homeowners to:

  • Do not leave valuables lying around
  • Check Better Business Bureau reviews
  • Get a written contract
  • Avoid contractors who require large down payments
  • Ask for identification and meet face to face before starting the project

Angi’s Response

In response to these incidents, Angi defends its vetting process, stating that they conduct background checks on company owners and maintain high standards for their pros. However, customers who have had negative experiences are encouraged to reach out for help.

Ultimately, the responsibility lies with homeowners to protect themselves and their investments. By following Detective Rocha’s advice and staying vigilant, you can avoid falling victim to scams on platforms like Angi.
