Construction Underway for New Reproductive Health Clinic in New Mexico
SANTA FE, N.M. – Exciting news for residents of southern New Mexico as construction begins on a state-funded reproductive health and abortion clinic. This clinic will not only serve local residents but also those who travel from neighboring states like Texas and Oklahoma, where major restrictions on abortion exist, as announced by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on Thursday.
The construction of this much-needed clinic will be made possible by $10 million in state funding allocated by Governor Lujan Grisham through a 2022 executive order. New Mexico is known for having one of the most liberal abortion access laws in the country.
Governor Lujan Grisham, a second-term Democrat, emphasized her dedication to ensuring access to abortion services, especially in the wake of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.
“Access to reproductive healthcare should be a fundamental human right,” stated Lujan Grisham. “Once completed, this clinic will stand as a testament to our state’s commitment to reproductive freedom for residents of New Mexico and beyond.”
New Mexico joins other Democratic-led states like California and New Jersey in bolstering abortion services and protections. Last year, New Jersey awarded $15 million to healthcare facilities providing abortion services, while California recently approved $200 million to strengthen its abortion protections.
The construction of the clinic in New Mexico comes at a crucial time as public policy on abortion takes center stage ahead of the November general election, with all state Legislature seats up for reelection.
The state’s repeal of a decades-old abortion statute in 2021 ensured access to abortion services, yet opposition remains strong in certain communities. Several New Mexico cities and counties have passed abortion-ban ordinances, with the legality of these measures currently under review by the state Supreme Court.
Stay tuned for updates on the opening of the new clinic in Las Cruces, offering a range of reproductive health services to meet the needs of the community.
