SAN ANTONIO – The influx of South Americans into the U.S. is providing a significant boost to a local San Antonio business.
Daniel Molano, owner of Sabor de Sanchez, a Colombian restaurant, is thrilled with the growing Colombian community in the city. “When I first arrived in San Antonio, there were 3,000 Colombians, and now there are 10,000,” Molano shared.
According to Pew Research data, Colombians constitute the seventh-largest Hispanic population in the U.S. The community has seen a remarkable 183% increase from 2000 to 2021.
Originally a journalist from Colombia, Molano moved to San Antonio 14 years ago. He initially purchased a Mexican restaurant but soon recognized the demand for a variety of flavors.
“Eight years ago, I made the decision to focus on Colombian cuisine, offering traditional dishes like empanadas, arepas, and bandeja paisa, instead of just tacos,” Molano explained.
The popularity of his restaurant led Molano to expand, opening a second location at Loop 1604 and Stone Oak, as well as a food truck. “I never imagined I would have multiple restaurants,” he expressed with a smile.
Colombian cuisine staples include empanadas, carne asada, picada, and arepas. Be sure to try them with the unique Colombian sauce, Aji.
