SAN ANTONIO – A substantial $520,000 grant has been awarded to enhance street safety programs in San Antonio, as announced in a recent city news release.
The funding, obtained from the Safe Streets and Roads for All program, will be utilized to implement “quick-builds,” which involve cost-effective road improvements across the city. The San Antonio Transportation Department will also contribute an additional $130,000 towards this initiative.
This grant marks the department’s second allocation under the Safe Streets for All (SS4A) program. Established through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the SS4A program aims to enhance safety and accessibility through the implementation of temporary quick-build projects.
Quick-build projects, as described by Smart Growth America, are temporary installations that serve to test new street designs to improve safety and accessibility.
City Manager Erik Walsh emphasized the strategic importance of securing federal funding for local priorities through various government programs. These installations will complement ongoing city programs such as Vision Zero and the Bicycle Network Plan.
In addition, a portion of the funding will be allocated to airport improvements, including runway enhancements and parking lot realignments in preparation for the new terminal project.
Addressing the question of specific areas for installations, city public information officer Joe Conger stated that the quick-build projects will be distributed across the city, with a focus on discovering potential locations and designing a streamlined process.
Councilwoman Sukh Kaur expressed support for the grant, highlighting the value of community input and the long-term benefits it will bring to safety and accessibility in the city.
“Investing in safer streets is investing in the future of our community,” Kaur mentioned in a statement to KSAT, emphasizing the significance of the grant in fostering a safer environment for all road users.
