SAN ANTONIO – Exciting news is brewing in downtown San Antonio as the city unveils plans for a new Spurs arena and entertainment district. With an ambitious price tag of $3-4 billion, the project, codenamed Project Marvel, aims to revitalize the southeast part of downtown, bringing back the Spurs to their roots at Hemisfair.

Records obtained by KSAT reveal that City of San Antonio Asst. Manager Lori Houston reached out to real estate and consulting companies in June 2023 to explore the development of a sports and entertainment district. In an email to a commercial real estate firm, Houston mentioned the city’s feasibility phase for the $3-4 billion project.

Further correspondence with Johnson Consulting highlighted expertise in working on sports facilities, hinting at the grand scale of Project Marvel. Non-disclosure agreements were shared, and a virtual meeting was scheduled for June 23, 2023, signaling a significant step forward in the project.

While details about the funding and specific allocation of the $4 billion remain unclear, the city’s interest in Hemisfair and the Institute of Texan Cultures as a potential site for the new arena is well-known. Plans may also include expanding the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and major upgrades to the Alamodome, with the potential addition of a land bridge over I-37.

The city remains focused on downtown redevelopment, with a sports and entertainment district being a promising addition. However, decisions are pending council briefings and community input. The Spurs, currently based at the Frost Bank Center until 2032, have not officially commented on Project Marvel.

Excitement is building as San Antonio explores this transformative project that could reshape downtown. Stay tuned for updates as the city progresses towards its vision for Project Marvel.
