Welcome to the latest update on the San Francisco All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey’s status for the season opener against the New York Jets. McCaffrey is listed as questionable due to a sore calf and Achilles, which he injured early in training camp. Despite missing four weeks of practice, McCaffrey returned to the field this week and has been limited in practice leading up to the game.
In addition to McCaffrey, the 49ers will have key players like All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams and star receiver Brandon Aiyuk available for the opener. Williams and Aiyuk missed all of training camp practices due to contract disputes but are now ready to contribute on game day.
Coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned that Aiyuk may be eased back into action, while Williams is expected to play the entire game. Shanahan praised Williams’ progress in practice, noting that he has been getting more comfortable every day.
McCaffrey has played a pivotal role in transforming San Francisco’s offense since being acquired from Carolina. In his 27 games with the Niners, McCaffrey has been a dual-threat, accumulating over 2,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards along with multiple touchdowns.
Despite the limited practice time, quarterback Brock Purdy is confident in the chemistry between himself, McCaffrey, Williams, and Aiyuk, citing their game experience together as a key factor in their cohesion.
Several players, including DE Yetur Gross-Matos and LB Dee Winters, will be out for the opener due to injuries. Safety Talanoa Hufanga is doubtful as he continues to recover from an ACL injury, while guard Aaron Banks is questionable for the game.
