SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Brandon Aiyuk’s contract dispute with the 49ers finally came to an end last Thursday when he signed a new deal. Aiyuk’s first choice was always to stay in San Francisco, and the franchise never wanted to let go of their star receiver.
However, the negotiation process was not easy. Aiyuk admitted, “I made it a little bit more difficult than I needed to at the end.” Despite the challenges, the sides eventually agreed to a four-year, $120 million contract extension with $76 million in guarantees.
There were talks of potential trades with other teams that didn’t materialize. In the end, the most logical solution was for Aiyuk to stay in San Francisco, where he will continue playing with quarterback Brock Purdy in coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
Aiyuk expressed his happiness about the outcome, saying, “Ultimately, I wanted to be here, and I ended up being here. So I’m happy and ready to go.”
Many receivers had already signed lucrative contracts this offseason, and Aiyuk became the sixth receiver with an average annual contract exceeding $30 million. He could have played this season on the fifth-year option but chose to push for a new deal now.
Reflecting on the negotiation process, Aiyuk mentioned, “A squeaky wheel has to be silent sometimes but know when to squeak.” Despite the challenges, he is relieved that the deal is finally done.
Aiyuk’s presence was missed during the dispute, as he conducted his “hold in” throughout camp. Although he was around for meetings, he refused to practice until the contract situation was resolved.
Despite the tough negotiations, Aiyuk’s connection with Purdy has been vital for San Francisco’s offense. Last season, Aiyuk had an impressive performance with 75 catches, 1,375 yards, and seven touchdowns, earning second-team All-Pro honors.
Purdy’s exceptional passer rating when targeting Aiyuk further highlights their strong relationship on the field. Aiyuk’s contribution to the offense, alongside other star players, has been significant for the team’s success.
Overall, the contract extension signifies a new chapter for Aiyuk in San Francisco, where he can continue to excel on the field and build on his impressive career so far.
