Billy Horschel Wins BMW PGA Championship in Dramatic Playoff
VIRGINIA WATER – Billy Horschel made history by becoming the first American golfer to win the BMW PGA Championship twice. He clinched the victory in a thrilling playoff against four-time major winner Rory McIlroy.
Horschel’s nerves of steel were on full display as he sank a long eagle putt on the second playoff hole, sealing his triumph over McIlroy. The two competitors shared a warm embrace after the dramatic finale.
Reflecting on his victory, the 37-year-old Horschel expressed his love for the event, saying, “It’s always one of my most special weeks of the year. I enjoy coming here. I feel a sense of ease, I feel a sense of calm. I know I’m not from the U.K. or London or England, but I feel almost at home when I come here.”
Horschel had previously won the tournament at Virginia Water three years ago. This year, he found himself tied for second place with McIlroy, three strokes behind leader Matteo Manassero of Italy.
Both Horschel and McIlroy shot impressive 5-under 67s to finish at 20 under, joining South African Thriston Lawrence in a thrilling three-way playoff.
The playoff came down to McIlroy and Horschel after Lawrence dropped out with a bogey. Ultimately, Horschel’s eagle on the second playoff hole secured his victory over McIlroy.
McIlroy, reflecting on his performance, praised the high level of competition, saying, “It just shows the standard out here. If you slip up just a little bit or don’t make a birdie on a crucial hole, someone is always waiting to take advantage of that.”
The victory marked Horschel’s second triumph at the prestigious event, solidifying his status as a top contender in the world of golf.
