After an excruciating 36-year wait, fans of the iconic film are ecstatic as “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has finally hit the big screens again, smashing records with a staggering $110 million in its premiere weekend.
Directed by the legendary Tim Burton, the captivating sequel has emerged as the third-highest-grossing movie in its opening weekend this year, trailing only behind blockbusters like “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
The star-studded cast features the return of the original trio with Michael Keaton reprising his role as Beetlejuice, alongside Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder as Delia and Lydia Deetz, respectively. Newcomer Jenna Ortega shines as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid, while Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Justin Theroux add depth to the ensemble.
With a remarkable performance, the sequel has cemented its position as the second-highest-grossing September movie in history, only falling short of the 2017 sensation “It,” which opened with a stunning $123 million. The 2019 sequel, “It Chapter 2,” debuted with $91 million.
The original “Beetlejuice” film may have started slow with only $8 million in its opening weekend back in 1988, but it gained tremendous popularity over time, grossing $77 million in domestic theaters and earning a spot as a cult classic.
This electrifying start to the fall movie season comes after a lackluster Labor Day weekend and a relatively quiet August at the box office, where newer releases struggled to make an impact while established films dominated.
