BCSO: Inmate dies at Bexar County Jail after medical episode

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – A tragic incident occurred at the Bexar County Jail, where an inmate, Andrea Nicole Garcia, passed away due to a medical episode related to detoxing conditions. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office reported that despite efforts to save her, Garcia was pronounced dead by the San Antonio Fire Department.

According to preliminary reports, Garcia’s medical episode was exacerbated by detoxing conditions, but the official cause of death will be determined by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office. This marks the fifth death at the jail since July, with nine reported deaths so far this year.

Garcia was booked into the jail on charges of Theft over $1500 and Failure to Identify. The investigation into her death is being handled by Bexar County’s Precinct 2 Constable’s Office under the Sandra Bland Act, with internal investigations by BCSO’s Internal Affairs unit.

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has been notified, and jail officials are working to ensure transparency and accountability in this tragic event.
