Bass guitarist Herbie Flowers, who played with Bowie and Reed, dies at 86

LONDON – The music world is mourning the loss of iconic bass guitarist Herbie Flowers, who passed away at the age of 86. Flowers, known for his collaborations with legends like David Bowie, Elton John, and Lou Reed, left a lasting impact on the industry through his incredible talent and contribution to numerous hit songs.

Flowers was a key member of the pop group Blue Mink and later joined rock band T Rex, solidifying his place in music history. His work on Reed’s “Walk On The Wild Side” and Bowie’s “Space Oddity” showcased his unmatched skill and creativity, earning him recognition among the biggest names in U.K. music during the 1970s.

In addition to his collaborations with Bowie, Ferry, and McCartney, Flowers co-founded the instrumental rock band Sky in the late 1970s, releasing seven albums that further highlighted his musical prowess.

Bowie’s estate paid tribute to Flowers, praising his work and remembering him as a beautiful soul and a funny man. The music community also expressed their condolences, with Tim Burgess acknowledging Flowers for making the greats sound even greater.
