Moving Scams: How to Protect Yourself When Hiring a Moving Company

Moving into a new home is an exciting milestone, but the process of packing up and relocating can be daunting. Hiring a moving company can alleviate some of the stress associated with moving heavy belongings, but it’s essential to be cautious to avoid falling victim to scammers. Here are some tips to help you protect yourself when hiring a moving company:

Do Your Research
Before hiring a moving company, it’s crucial to do your due diligence. Verify that the company is registered and reputable. If you’re moving across state lines or internationally, you can check the U.S. Department of Transportation website for valuable information. Additionally, research the company’s website for in-state moves, look for state requirements, a local address, contact details, licenses, and insurance. Reading reviews and searching for any complaints or scams associated with the company can help you ensure you’re dealing with a legitimate operation.

Get Written Estimates and Agreements
When pricing out different moving companies, make sure to request written estimates. Review these estimates to ensure that all your belongings are listed and compare prices effectively. It’s also important to inquire about the cost of insuring your items and the coverage provided if they are damaged during the move.

Know When to Say No
Be wary of moving companies that ask you to sign incomplete paperwork or demand cash or a large deposit upfront. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises against hiring interstate movers who are not registered with the Department of Transportation.

Where to Report
If you encounter issues with a moving company, report them to the appropriate authorities. In-state movers should be reported to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, while interstate moves should be reported to the DOT. If you suspect you’ve been scammed, report it to the FTC and follow the necessary steps to protect yourself.

By following these tips and being vigilant when hiring a moving company, you can help safeguard yourself against moving scams and ensure a smooth and stress-free relocation process. Remember, it’s better to be cautious and thorough than to fall victim to a scam.
