Authors file lawsuit against Anthropic for copyright infringement in creating Claude AI chatbot.

Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic is facing a lawsuit from a group of authors, accusing the company of training its chatbot Claude on pirated copies of copyrighted books. This marks the first time writers have targeted Anthropic and its AI product, setting the stage for a legal battle that could have far-reaching implications for the tech industry.

Founded by ex-OpenAI leaders, Anthropic has positioned itself as a responsible developer of generative AI models that can interact with people in a natural way. However, the lawsuit alleges that the company’s actions undermine its stated goals by using pirated content to build its AI technology.

The authors filing the lawsuit, including Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson, seek to represent a class of similarly affected writers. In addition to the lawsuit from authors, Anthropic is also facing legal action from major music publishers over allegations that Claude reproduces copyrighted song lyrics without permission.

This case is just one in a series of lawsuits against tech companies developing large language models, with allegations of misappropriation of copyrighted materials. Companies like OpenAI and Microsoft are already embroiled in copyright infringement cases brought by well-known authors and media outlets.

The lawsuit against Anthropic challenges the notion that training AI models falls under the “fair use” doctrine, arguing that the company used a dataset containing pirated books. The plaintiffs assert that AI systems like Claude do not learn in the same way humans do, raising questions about the ethics of using copyrighted materials to train AI algorithms.

As the legal battles in the tech industry continue to unfold, the outcome of this lawsuit could shape the future of AI development and intellectual property rights. Stay tuned for updates on this unfolding story.
