Amputee nurse in San Antonio urges community to donate blood

SAN ANTONIO – In the rush of an emergency room, time hardly stands still. But for Jason Clarke, it felt like an eternity two years ago.

Clarke was involved in a severe car accident in August 2022, which resulted in major injuries and the loss of his arm just weeks later.

Formerly an emergency room nurse at Mission Trail Baptist Hospital, Clarke faced a long road to recovery with 18 surgeries ahead of him. The journey was challenging, but Clarke remained resilient.

After a year of perseverance and dedication, Clarke made a remarkable return to the Baptist Health System in September 2024, now serving as a shift supervisor.

Sharing his story, Clarke aims to inspire hope and shed light on the critical need for blood donations in San Antonio.

“No one will truly understand the impact,” Clarke expressed, emphasizing the importance of donations in saving lives.

Erik Frederick, president of Mission Trail Baptist Hospital, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the urgent need for blood donations nationwide.

With recent cases requiring substantial amounts of blood, the hospital emphasizes the constant jeopardy of blood supply.

Through his resilience and advocacy, Clarke hopes to showcase how life can move forward despite challenges, leaving a lasting legacy of hope and perseverance.

To contribute to this vital cause, consider donating blood today.
