# Remembering Al Attles: A Warriors Legend

OAKLAND, Calif. – The basketball world mourns the loss of a true legend – Al Attles. Attles, a Hall of Famer who coached the 1975 NBA champion Warriors and served the organization for over six decades as a player, general manager, and team ambassador, passed away at the age of 87.

The Warriors announced that Attles died at his East Bay home, surrounded by family. The team did not disclose the cause of death.

Nicknamed “The Destroyer” for his aggressive style of play, the Warriors were his lifelong passion. He joined the team in 1960 and remained with Golden State until his passing, marking a remarkable 64-year association, the longest single-franchise tenure in NBA history.

Attles, an early trailblazer as one of the first Black head coaches in the NBA, witnessed some of the greatest moments in basketball history. From playing alongside Wilt Chamberlain in his historic 100-point game to coaching legends like Rick Barry and Klay Thompson, Attles left an indelible mark on the sport.

“Al was my mentor and friend. He taught me invaluable lessons on professionalism that went beyond the court,” said Barry in a statement. “His leadership, togetherness, and strategic acumen were instrumental in our 1975 championship triumph.”

Attles coached the Warriors to their first title in 1975, and his 557 coaching wins remain a franchise record. His impact went beyond the court, as he was revered for his humility, wisdom, and enduring dedication to the game.

The passing of Attles marks another loss for the Bay Area sports community, following recent deaths of baseball icons Willie Mays and Orlando Cepeda.
