Artificial Intelligence Deepfake Scam Targets Sen. Ben Cardin
In a recent incident, an advanced deepfake operation took aim at Senator Ben Cardin, the Democratic chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. This sophisticated attempt highlights the growing trend of nefarious actors using artificial intelligence to deceive top political figures in the United States.
The notice from the Office of Senate Security revealed that the operation sought to impersonate Dmytro Kuleba, the former Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, in a video call with Senator Cardin. Despite initial believability, suspicions arose when the imposter started asking politically charged questions, prompting Cardin and his staff to alert the authorities.
Cardin described the encounter as a deceptive attempt by a malign actor and emphasized the importance of swift action and ongoing investigations to address such threats effectively.
