Aces coach Becky Hammon refutes Hamby’s mistreatment claims during pregnancy

LAS VEGAS – The world of professional sports can be a complex and controversial place, as evidenced by the recent allegations surrounding former Aces player Dearica Hamby. The saga, which began when Hamby was traded to Los Angeles in January 2023, has shone a spotlight on the treatment of athletes, particularly pregnant players, in the WNBA.

During a recent game between the Las Vegas Aces and the Los Angeles Sparks, Aces coach Becky Hammon addressed the controversy, vehemently denying any mistreatment of Hamby. Hammon, who has an impressive 25-year career in the WNBA and NBA, stated that she has never had an HR complaint filed against her. She also emphasized that the decision to trade Hamby was based on strategic reasons, and not related to her pregnancy.

The situation escalated when Hamby filed a lawsuit against the WNBA and her former team, alleging discrimination and mistreatment. The WNBA conducted an investigation, resulting in Hammon being suspended for two games without pay, and the Aces losing their first-round 2025 draft pick for providing impermissible benefits to players.

Despite these consequences, Hamby remains firm in her stance, filing a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and amending it in October. The EEOC ruled in May that she had a “right to sue,” indicating that the legal battle is far from over.

As the controversy continues to unfold, it serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges faced by female athletes in professional sports. The resilience and determination shown by Dearica Hamby in standing up for her rights highlight the importance of equality and fair treatment for all athletes, regardless of gender or circumstance.
